Hop Scotch - Scotch Ale
This tasty little brew was also based mostly on a recipe from Home Brew Mart, but I decided to use some left-over Fuggles hops at the end of the brew for an additional hoppy punch, hence the name (thanks Micah!). Here's the recipe:
- 10# Coopers LME
- 1# Scottish Dark Crystal
- 1/2# 60L Crystal Malt
- 1/2# Dark Carastan
- 1/4# Smoked Malt (Light smoke, NOT peated malt!)
- 2 oz. Kent Golding hops (4.2%AA, 60 mins)
- 1 oz. Fuggles hops (4.8% AA, last 15 mins of boil)
Fermented with White Labs Edinburgh Ale Yeast
OG: 1.071; FG: TBD (not yet bottled) --> ABV: also TBD as a result
The initial flavors of the beer were very sweet, with a caramel-like malt flavor and a hint of earthy smoke from the smoked malt. The addition of the Fuggles hops in the last bit of the boil give it a nice hoppy aftertaste without being overly aggressive. Go to BevMo, find a Moylan's Kilt Lifter Scotch-style Ale, drink it, and remember that flavor: that's pretty much what this one will taste like.
This beer has been fermenting for just over 2 weeks now; the plan was to bottle this beer while brewing the Black Heart Imperial Stout, but it was still much more active, which means the yeast are still happily feeding away, and even more alcohol is going into the beer! After an additional week, this beer will be bottled and given the standard 3-week-minimum bottle-conditioning. I'll post updates when it goes into the bottles so that I can fill in the Final Gravity and ABV!
Slainte!
